Silk Road: the online drug marketplace that officials seem powerless to stop

Silk Road

Silk Road: the online drug marketplace that officials seem powerless to stop

Authorities around the world know about the website, but closing it is another matter – partly because it uses Bitcoins

The Silk Road online marketplace, which lists more than 10,000 items, 7,000 of which are drugs
Mark Johnson* rifles through his mail as he gets home from work. Among the usual bills is a small padded envelope. Though it doesn't have his name on, it's the package he's most interested in: inside lie two grams of, he hopes, relatively pure MDMA.
Johnson has no idea who has sent him the envelope: he has never met his dealer, and never will. The delivery was facilitated through a website called Silk Road, an underground eBay-like site which has become the core marketplace for buying and selling drugs online – and despite law enforcement authorities across the world being fully aware of its operation they have, so far, been powerless to stop it.
The site has been shrouded in secrecy even since it was founded in February 2011, but research due to be formally published later this year tracked its growth during six months of last year. Over those months, sales on the site doubled, hitting $1.7m a month.
Johnson, a TV executive, is one of those contributing to those monthly takings. Describing himself as "not excited or impressed by drugs per se", but "interested" in them, he explains how he came to the Silk Road.
"I heard about it at a party, from the type of guy you only ever meet at parties," he said. "I missed the last train. I might as well go hard. His brown envelope proved to be a veritable party bag, reminiscent of Hunter S Thompson. Where had he found all this? The Silk Road."

Link to video: Bitcoin: the fastest growing currency in the world Johnson said his view was that Silk Road was a site for connoisseurs: an easy way to track down better quality – not cheap – drugs. The site "isn't easy to use", but doesn't require particular expertise: "If you can set up a direct debit and follow a recipe for risotto then you'll work it out."
Once you're in, it works much like eBay: sellers' reputations are verified through feedback, building trust. Money is typically held in an escrow (a trusted middleman) until delivery, with missing packages qualifying for partial refunds.
In all, he concludes, the quality is more consistent, the sale is safer, and the experience better than trying to find a street dealer. Johnson even claims the site helps combat addiction.
"There are some highly addictive and dangerous substances available on Silk Road, so instant access wouldn't be advisable," he concludes. "You must undertake the purchase soberly, with plenty of occasions to confirm your intentions."
Silk Road today lists more than 10,000 items, 7,000 of which are drugs, with erotica, books and fake IDs among the rest. Notably missing are weapons of any sort (a sister site selling weapons shut due to lack of demand last year) and child pornography, both of which are banned.
Dr Nicolas Christin, who researched the site, believes Silk Road is far bigger today than it was in July 2012 when his fieldwork ended. "It's not a matter of the police locking a few guys up to end this," he said. "It is very distributed: we are looking at more than 600 sellers each month."
How has a marketplace with millions of pounds of revenue survived the long arm of the law? The answer, according to its users, lies in the way it is structured.
Silk Road is no secret to law enforcement, who know where to find it online – indeed, shortly after the site's existence was first reported in 2011, the senior US senator Chuck Schumer vowed to shut it down.
"It's a certifiable one-stop shop for illegal drugs that represents the most brazen attempt to peddle drugs online that we have ever seen," he said.
The site continued uninterrupted, thanks to two technological innovations that make it all but impregnable.
The first is that Silk Road runs as a "hidden service" on a popular internet anonymising tool known as Tor. This makes identifying the physical location of the computers operating the marketplace – or anyone visiting it – all but impossible.
The legitimate uses of Tor make disrupting the service morally difficult: it is a staple of activists avoiding internet censorship or government crackdowns the world over, including in China, Iran and Syria. Indeed, a large proportion of Tor's funding comes – albeit indirectly – from the US state department's internet freedom budget.
In his paper, Christin raised the possibility that authorities might instead try to disrupt Silk Road's other protection: its use of the anonymous, stateless, encrypted online currency known as Bitcoin. But that's a task that's only getting harder.
Bitcoins are a currency controlled by no government, no company, and no group, but rather by maths: a series of complex cryptographic calculations rule how many Bitcoins are in existence and how many are traded.
Silk Road is probably the biggest use of the currency, followed by an unregulated online gambling site known as Satoshidice.
But more mainstream services are adopting the currency: the blogging platform Wordpress accepts Bitcoins, as does the social news site Reddit. WikiLeaks opened up to Bitcoin when the mainstream banking system blockaded the site.
At the currency's birth, Bitcoins were almost worthless – five cents each. Today, a single Bitcoin trades at $70 (£46) – and the total value of all the world's Bitcoins has topped $800m (£500m). On the face of it, this makes Bitcoin the fastest-growing currency in the world.
Bitcoin creators Mihai Alisie, editor of Bitcoin Magazine, and Amir Taaki, a Bitcoin developer and activist, in a squat in London. Photograph: Linda Nylind for the Guardian Despite the present value of what they have created, several of the key players in the currency's community can be found occupying a "political squat" in central London, mere minutes away from the financiers they intend to disrupt.
Walking through a corridor of conference rooms rearranged into makeshift lounges, Amir Taaki – a Bitcoin developer and activist, and convenor of Bitcoin conferences – rejects concerns that Bitcoins' biggest use is unethical.
"People want drugs. The drugs war is probably a failed war," he says. "I want to get rid of cartels. The way to do that is for people to buy their drugs straight from the producer. That's what's cool about things like Silk Road – you can bypass gangs."
Taaki claims freedom to purchase is freedom of speech – and illustrates his argument by raising a service which allows Bitcoins to exist purely as a passphrase in a user's head, 'spent' by typing (or saying) the key phrase.
"Can you imagine if we had restrictions of speech, or the surveillance state, 400 years ago? We wouldn't have had the Reformation, or the Enlightenment, or the scientific revolution. Those would have been stopped – and we're having other kinds of revolutions now."
For many of those involved, Bitcoins are far more than a handy way to buy drugs. Instead, they are a challenge to the orthodoxies of mainstream finance: "extortionate" fees to transfer money, real-time customer tracking of every credit card foundation, even government oversight of banks.
Bitcoins' value might be a bubble caused by people trying to cash in on soaring value, or a result of panicked savers in Cyprus and Spain looking for somewhere to move their money, or the result of people looking to buy drugs. To Mihai Alisie, editor of Bitcoin magazine, it hardly matters.
"At this point there's no penalty for politicians saying 'yeah, let's ban Bitcoin, you can buy drugs online, so let's ban it'. But if politicians would ban Bitcoin for that, it is like burning an entire village to roast a pig. It's like shutting down the internet because someone's posting pornography," he says.
"Bitcoin is definitely more than a get-rich scheme. I think it's the next big technology that will revolutionise our society. It's as big as the internet – or maybe bigger."
Interviews concluded, Taaki and Alisie climb to the roof of the office block that is their current home. Taaki walks to the edge, looks over to the clustered skyscrapers that make up the City of London, and raises his middle finger.
Miles across London, Mark Johnson slips his MDMA into his back pocket, getting ready to sample his latest delivery over the weekend.

Hash: SHA1

Silk Road has decided to move on with a new venture, a new Silk Road. We have listened to sellers feedback from here and the forums and with the amount of buyer scams on the rise we have decided to act. On the 1st of April we will be launching Silk Road 2.0 as a separate site to the main site. This site will be invite only and work on a web of trust method.

As one of our high ranking, trusted sellers we are inviting you to participate and be amongst the few to join. Sellers will be recruited from the main site when we feel they have gained our
trust that they are reputable sellers. Buyers will in the first instance be recruited on their seller stats (min 6 months, minimal refund & auto finalize, $1500+ sales) thereafter they will only be invited by you, the sellers. This will be the web of trust working to best effect.

We will have a quick ban policy on any scams or scammers and they will not be able to re-join for at least 3 months (If invited again) We are hoping to provide a safer, more productive site for you, our trusted sellers. We also hope because of the way the site will work we will see a better community evolve, and larger deals being able to be placed. Silk Road will still run in conjunction with Silk Road 2.0

The Site is due to go live on the 31st of March 2013 with an announcement on the forum at the same time, the reason we have kept it quiet so far is that we expect a lot of debate about the site on the forum as until sellers begin to invite their customers the people allowed to join will be limited. We ask that you do not mention it to your customers until this time.

As a trusted vendor the fee for joining with this invite is 2btc (~$100) after the 1st of April the fee will be the same as the main site. Your unique btc address to send the payment to is 17UcDKHtusuSijELtFxqpw2p8dYFvQARuU

Once the payment has been matched and confirmed you will receive the address of the new page with a link to register and build your store. please do not release the address until after 31st March.

We hope you join us in this new and exciting venture

How To Access The Silk Road Anonymous  Marketplace

The wildness of the Internet, as seen by most travelers of the information super highway, are well known, though, not well witnessed. Stories of people procuring human organs via the Internet or "hackers" selling credit card readers over the Internet are abound, but, the average Internet user rarely sees things like this first hand.
For the most part, stories and scenarios, like these, are passed around various media circles and read about by users who rarely venture beyond Facebook or eBay during their Internet travels. Still, the curiosity lingers in some, "Where do they sell this stuff?", "Where are these secret websites?", they ask themselves, often never finding a satisfactory answer to appease their wonder.
Certainly, a multitude of sites exist that hold scores of seedy, mischievous and very illegal information, dealings and otherwise. Though, to access them an average user would be opening themselves up to possible malevolence. So, with regards to the average user and his or her well being. Instead, perhaps simply to quell the curiosity, we might explore "The Silk Road", the deep web's version of AMAZON...just better !It enriches your life on a brand new way.Your dreams come true

This is the best & easiest way to buy Bitcoins:

 To visit use this adress:

What is "The Silk Road"? (The best shop on earth)

"The Silk Road", apart from the name used for a "network of interlinking trade routes across the Afro-Eurasian landmass that connected East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world, as well as parts of North and East Africa", it's also the name appropriated for a "free market" site buried in the "deep web". For all intents and purposes, this is the Silk Road I'll be referring to.
The web site, is labelled to be an unrestricted market with which patrons can buy a host of products not readily available in conventional markets. You can get almost anything there. The products range from knock off jewelry and electronics toevery sort of high quality drugs. The best you can get for money.

Buying on The Silk Road is so easy like buying at AMAZON

Purchasing an item from "The Silk Road" is actually very simple process .Participants in this "free market" like to remain anonymous and rightly so. The products sold on this site aren´t exactly conventional.
Instead, purchases are made through third party sources and actual money is never exchanged. Instead, a conduit called "bit coin currency" are used to buy items, so, credit card information is never entered on the actual site. Because of this, transactions can't be tracked electronically, at least, not without great effort. The names of the sellers, buyers and even countries of origin are all kept confidential.

How do I access The Silk Road?

The Silk Road, naturally, is very easy to access. The people that ply their wares on the site aren't traditional shop keeps and don't play well with others, so, the site is easily accessed. Still, selling can't be done without customers, so, there is a way to view and buy from the site.
Accessing the site from a traditional browser isn't possible, as browsers store information (such as: passwords, cookies, etc.). They also make reading your computer's IP address (Your computer's address on the internet, from which your physical location can be extracted) fairly easy to a hacker.
To circumvent this betrayal of location and vital information, you must access it using a specialized browser called Tor.
The Tor browser is a program, that uses complex algorithms, to mask a user's location and allows them to browse websites anonymously. There are settings in many popular browsers that claim to do just that or come close but, Tor is specifically made to disguise the user's location. "The
idea is similar to using a twisty, hard-to-follow route in order to
throw off somebody who is tailing you--then, periodically erasing your

Obviously, the difficulty of finding the site is beyond the reach of some internet users and is meant to be. Not all of what is sold on the Silk Road is illegal, though largely, a lot of it is classified as illegal. The site's address is markedly hidden, though, pretty easy to find. The URL didnt change, so watch out and take care for scammers.Scammers  always try to spread wrong  Silk Road URL´s to steal your login informations. There is only one Silk Road adress at the momentg, and this is:  http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion. The rest is bullshit.Dont use it, or your Silk Road account gets hacked.

Buy Bitcoins:

Silk Road Buyers Guide (Silk Road Bible)

The currency used to buy stuff on Silk Road are Bitcoin. Bitcoin uses encryption and a system of peer-to-peer double checking to create a completely digital currency. No personal information is associated with your bitcoins at all, making them ideal for anonymous transactions. Additionally, Silk Road employs a built-in tumbler that mixes all incoming bitcoins through a series of dummy transactions before they ever leave.

Silk Road employs a escrow system for all transaction. This means that when you make a order the bitcoins are deducted from you wallet, moves into a temporary escrow account, then after the vendor sends to order they confirm it being sent. When you receive the package, you confirm it being received and the vendor revives the coin. If for whatever reason you do not receive the package you can send the order into resolution, where you and the vendor can resolve the problem or should that not work Silk Road well step in an resolve the issue. Keep in mind this system is to prevent fraud on both the end of the seller and the buyer.

Connecting to Hidden Services

If you are reading this now, you have at least figured out how to access a tor hidden service, good job :) You have either installed tor and configured your browser to use it, or you are using a proxy such as tor2web. We strongly encourage you to connect to the hidden service directly rather than going through a proxy as it is much more secure and anonymous. The Tor Browser Bundle is available for all major platforms.

Getting Bitcoins

In the Internet you will find lists of reputable exchangers that will take many different forms of payment for Bitcoins. When they ask for your receiving address, give them the address on your account page that looks something like this:

Your deposit will appear in your account once the Bitcoin network confirms your transfer. This can take up to an hour or more. If for some reason your transfer doesn't come through, just let us know and be sure to include the address you sent the coins to.

Your account has a built-in eWallet for Bitcoins, so you can buy and sell here without ever having to worry about third-party services at all. When you sell something, your account is credited, and when you buy something, it is debited.

To get bitcoins european customers should use this bitcoin exchange:
US customers use this bitcoin exchange:
Or this one here:

Every shop has his own payment options, so look for a local bitcoin exchange in your area !!
Watch this video to get more informations:

Shopping Cart

The first step to placing an order is selecting the items you want to purchase by adding them to your shopping cart. From the cart, you may increase the quantity of your purchase, and select the appropriate postage option. See your vendor's page or the item description for postage instructions. When you've chosen your postage and quantity, click "update cart" to confirm the changes. Once your cart is ready, you must enter the address you would like your items sent to. This is the one point in the process where some kind of personal information is revealed. We take this very seriously and have taken every precaution to protect it.

Receiving adress

From the moment you submit your order, to the moment it is displayed to your vendor, the information is fully encrypted and totally unreadable. Then, as soon as your vendor marks your package with the address and confirms shipment, the address is deleted forever and is not retrievable. For the extra cautious, you can encrypt your information yourself with your vendor's public key so that even we at Silk Road would be unable to view it, even if we wanted to. See below for more ways to be safe.

If you have enough funds in your account to cover your purchase, then your order will be validated instantly and sent on to your vendor. If not, then you must deposit enough Bitcoins into your account to cover your total.

When your order ships, its status will change from "processing" to "in transit." Now just kick back and wait for it to arrive. Once it does, don't forget to click "finalize" next to your order and leave feedback.

If you are a new buyer you have to pay before the seller ships your item. Not every seller requires this.Try to find sellers where you don´t have to "finalize early" for your own security, so you can´t get scammed.
If you have more than 5-10 transactions than you pay after you get your package.Never forget to "finalize" after you get your package.
If you forget to pay (finalize) after 2 weeks the auto-finalize function starts but than you get a bad feedback in your rating stats.
Bad feedbacks in your shopping history= No seller won´t sell you anything more until you finalize early !
Never "finalize early" if it´s possible.
Finalize early= Big risk to get scammed, but you found a trusted seller and you are his patronthan its no problem.
Check the Silk Road forum first and "Google - check" his name there, so you can check if he is a good or a bad seller.
This is the adress of the Silk Road Forum (requires TOR):  http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/

Receiving packages

Use a different, unrelated address than the one where your item will be kept such as a friends house or P.O. box. Once the item arrives, transport it discretely to its final destination. Avoid abandoned buildings or any place where it would be suspicious to have mail delivered.

Do not sign for your package. If you are expecting a package from us, do not answer the door for the postman, let him leave it there and then transport it as described above. Do not use your real name. This tactic doesn't work in some places because deliveries won't be made to names not registered with the address. If you think this is a problem, send your self a test letter with the fake name and see if it arrives.

If you follow these guidelines, your chances of being detected are minimal. In the event that you are detected, deny requesting the package. Anyone can send anyone else anything in the mail.

Escrow main article

Our commitment is to total satisfaction for each and every purchase you make here. If your package never arrives or is not in the condition you expected, you may have a chance at a full or partial refund of the purchase price. Just click "resolve" next to your order. Our resolution center gives you total flexibility in working out a mutually agreeable outcome with your vendor, whether you want to request a full or partial refund, release payment to your vendor, or extend the time you wait for arrival. In the rare event that an agreement can't be made, a Silk Road admin will be right there to mediate and investigate if necessary. The vast majority of orders are filled exactly as expected, but to avoid even the rare hang up, we strongly encourage you to read your vendor's feedback and ask questions of them ahead of time.

NEVER  go around the escrow and pay a vendor directly. We will be totally unable to protect you in this event and the vendor will have much less motivation to serve you well. People HAVE been scammed this way. If a seller requests that you pay them directly, please let us know so we can address the situation.
Purchasing statistics

Because you are totally anonymous on Silk Road, the vendors here have no way of knowing if they can trust you at first. To help them judge whether they want to do business with you or not, some statistics are kept about your past purchases. When you purchase an item, before the order is accepted, your vendor can see how long you have been a member on the site, how many orders have been shipped out to you, and what percentage of the payments you made for those purchases were ultimately refunded to you. They can also see how many orders you ignored and allowed to "auto-finalize." So, the best way to keep a good reputation and eventually be accepted by all of the vendors here is to finalize your orders as soon as they arrive and you confirm they are good, and to only request a refund when you deserve it. The statistics are weighted toward the present, so you must keep up your good behavior, but if you have a bad streak, you can recover by doing well going forward. You can view your own stats at any time by clicking the link on your account page.

Here’s how Silk Road escrow works: you buy a product using the site and Silk Road holds onto your Bitcoins; you enter the shipping address and it is sent to the seller, your order is now in “processing.” Once the seller ships the product they mark the order as “in transit.” (The seller has three days to do this, or else the order can be cancelled.) Once the package arrives, the seller marks the order as “finalized,” the Bitcoins are given to the seller, and the buyer can leave feedback and a 0-5 rating. Finalization cannot be undone and escrow is over. Some dealers demand that buyers with less than five or so transactions finalize before shipment, but not all do. If there’s a problem between buyer and seller, the Silk Road administrators will help resolve it. A common result is 50% refund to the buyer if the seller reships 50% of the product.

Just when you thought Silk Road couldn't be more secure, we went one step further. The tumbler sends all payments through a complex, semi-random series of dummy transactions, each with a new, one-use receiving address, making it nearly impossible to link your payment with any coins leaving the site. The quantity, frequency, and number of transactions are all varied chaotically in a way that mimics the transactions of the bitcoin economy as a whole.

Escrow hedge

Unfortunately, the Bitcoin exchange rate isn't as stable as we would all like it to be, and can fluctuate wildly in a matter of hours, let alone the days or weeks it takes for a package to arrive. Because of this, there is a real danger that the Bitcoins being held in your escrow account will lose value by the time your vendor gets paid or you are refunded. So, we've given the option to vendors to hedge the future payments they are expecting from escrow such that the dollar value of the payment doesn't change as the Bitcoin exchange rate changes.

For example, a vendor is hedging the escrow for a 10 btc order you place with them, and the dollar value of your order when you purchase it is $100. Now, let's say your order never arrives and your vendor agrees to a full refund, but those 10 btc are no longer worth $100, they're worth $50! Because your vendor hedged the escrow, you won't get a refund of 10 btc, you'll get 20 btc equaling the original value of $100. Of course, the opposite is also true. If Bitcoins appreciate in value while your order is in escrow, your refund will be fewer Bitcoins, but still equaling the original dollar value.

When checking out, you will see which orders will be hedged and which won't. After the order is placed, your escrow balance will reflect the dollar value of your hedged orders and the Bitcoin value of your unhedged orders. All hedged orders are hedged as soon as the order is placed. So when getting a refund for hedged items, don't be surprised if the number of Bitcoins you get back is not the same as the amount you paid.

Final Note

We do everything we can to protect your anonymity and ensure that your visits here bring you great satisfaction. However, you should understand the risks of possessing and using any of the items you purchase here. Research these matters before jumping in and be responsible for your actions. Learn how Tor and Bitcoin work so you can understand how to use them and where their limitations are. If you have any questions or concerns, we are here to support you.

Making a Successsful Purchase

Making a successful purchase on Silk Road requires several elements to work for you: product discovery, order placement, delivery and finalization of the transaction.

Successful Product Discovery

Research the vendor heavily, paying a lot of attention to more recent feedback. Check feedback on vendor's profile on SR and search them on the forum. Reputable vendors will show up on the forum. If they aren't there, you are taking a big risk. Research the product you wish to by related to the country in which you live. Research success rates in deliveries between countries. Research the etiquette in making a purchase on Silk Road.

Read the sales page and the vendor page thoroughly, noting any special instructions given by the vendor. If you have any questions, send a message to the vendor, using PGP if they request it and especially if you have incriminating information to discuss in your message. Remember to include your public key if necessary.

Pay special attention to whether or not the vendor works in escrow or not. We always recommend that you buy in escrow. If you don't, all of your protection as a buyer is gone. Use your best judgment and if you choose to use a vendor that doesn't use SR's escrow system, don't spend bitcoins that you are attached to. If you are not comfortable with the way a vendor works, do not do business with them.

Successful Order Placement

When you are confident that you are going to have a good transaction, place your order. Be sure you encrypt your name and address when you place your order. Your odds for a successful delivery greatly increase when you use your real name and be sure your mailing address is correct. Research this on the forum before you assume that a fake name is best (see links below). Your bitcoin will disappear from your account and be placed in escrow. When your order is approved by the seller, the status on your order page will change to "processing," and links to "finalize" and "resolve" will appear. When your order has been shipped, the status will change to "in transit" and the options to finalize and resolve will continue to appear.

Successful Delivery

If you have used a good name and address in your order, and followed the above recommendations, there is a very good chance that your package should arrive to its destination. Be wary if something strange happens during delivery (being asked to sign for something you weren't expecting to sign for) and use your best judgment to deal with the situation if it arises.
Remember you have an order coming from an unknown person. Be generally aware of when to expect your order and check all your mail thoroughly. Your product could be hidden, and hidden well.

Successful Finalization

When your order has arrived, the very first thing you need to do after inspecting your package is to come back to your orders page and finalize the transaction by clicking the finalize link. This will release your escrowed bitcoin to the vendor. They have kept up with their end of the deal, it is proper for you to swiftly do the same thing.

After finalizing, you will be sent to a feedback page. Submit your honest feedback and remember, if the postal service "lost" your mail, it is not necessarily because the vendor didn't send it, If you did your research above, you should feel confident that your vendor did his part of the task, and an interrupted delivery is probably not his fault. Your feedback is your opinion on the seller, not the worldwide postal system.

An appreciated practice, if you have anything less than a 5 star feedback for your vendor, is to discuss your problems with the vendor before leaving your feedback. Give him/her an opportunity to make things right. Good vendors not only sell good shit, they want you to have a successful transaction too.

WARNING - do not leave details in your feedback with specifics on a sellers shipping. This is potentially incriminating information. Say the shipping was great, super stealth, best ever - but do not say anything about how it was done.

You can edit your feedback, in the event that you finalized early (you didn't finalize early, did you??), or if you hadn't tried the product when you left your initial feedback. If you wish to do this, go to your Account page on SR, then click on "View Feedback" on the upper right side of the page, then you will have opportunity to edit your feedback.

Absolutely none of your personal information is ever required here. However, an address WILL be needed to send delivery of any physical goods. Because of this you will need to learn how to use PGP, something you can do here. This program will allow you to send your address in an encrypted form so only the vendor sending you the goods can read it. Even so, Silk Road further encrypts stored data, and deletes it as soon as your transaction is complete, so there is no record of it. And, because Silk Road is a Tor Hidden Service, the address remains encrypted within the Tor network when it is transferred.

As for actual delivery you should never be asked to sign for any package! At the time of receiving your package you should should press received in your orders page. After this a box will be shown that ask for your rating and a comment about your order, this does not need to be filled out now! Please wait until after trying your product to leave you rating and comment so it can accurately reflect the product in question. Try to keep your comments helpful and well thought out.

Choose the category that most specifically matches your listing, as this makes it much easier for your customers to find your listing. Your listing will appear in this, and all parent categories above it, though these pages are cached so it can take up to an hour for your listings to appear
If you think your item could belong in more than one category, choose the one that suits it best and let us know about the ambiguity. We may be able to reorganize the categories in a more clear way.
If your listing doesn't fit in any of the categories, it may be on our restricted items list. See below for details.
NOTICE: Do not create listings that instruct customers to pay outside of escrow, or are used for any purpose other than to list an item to be sold for the listed price using the site checkout system. If you instruct your buyers to pay you in any other way, or to contact you off-site, your seller privileges WILL be revoked. You may provide back up contact methods in case of site failure.
NOTICE: If you are a new vendor, you may not ask your customers to finalize their orders and release payment to you before you ship, a practice known as "finalizing early". If you do this, you will lose your selling priviledges. Once you have completed 35 successful transactions and have been a seller for at least one month, you may ask your customers to finalize early without reprocussion. In no way do we support finalizing early in general and this rule should not be construed as support for finalizing early for more established vendors.

You have two options when pricing your listings. They can be priced in constant Bitcoins, or constant US Dollars. If you choose to peg your listings to the dollar, your prices will change dynamically in accordance with the exchange rate between the two currencies. When the Bitcoin appreciates, your prices will fall. When it depreciates, they will rise, so no matter what, you will get the same dollar value for your item. We recommend that you peg your prices to the dollar.

You may also choose whether to set your price before or after commission is added. If you choose "pre-commission pricing", the price you set will be the amount of money you are paid when a transaction is complete, but your customers will see a higher price that includes the commission. If you choose "post-commission pricing", you set the price that your customers pay. When you get paid, the amount you receive will be less than this by the amount of the commission.
Stealth mode
Stealth mode allows you to run your business out of view of the general public. Whether your sales are growing faster than you can expand your infrustructure to keep up, or you just don't want to be in the public eye any more and are happy with the size of your current customer base, stealth mode might by the solution for you. When activated, your listings will no longer appear in public searches, category views, or any pages linked to from the public site. However, your user and item pages will still be available when accessed directly, so your regular customers can still make purchases from you. You may activate stealth mode from your settings page. Note: It can take up to an hour for your listings to go stealth because of caching. Stealth listings
When listing or editing an item, you may also control its visibility. By checking the box next to stealth listing, you remove the listing from public searches, browsing, and even your user page, so it is only accessible by visiting the item url directly (you can find a link on your account page). This is useful for custom listings meant only for a specific buyer, or for listings you don't want visible on your publicly facing user page.

You have total freedom when it comes to your postage options. You can call them what you want and price them as you wish, but please be succinct with names like "International", "Priority", "Express", etc. You should create a little section on your user page explaining your shipping options and policies. Give your customers as much info as possible, including estimated shipping times.
Escrow Hedging
Unfortunately, the Bitcoin exchange rate isn't as stable as we would all like it to be, and can fluctuate wildly in a matter of hours, let alone the days or weeks it takes for a package to arrive. Because of this, there is a real danger that the Bitcoins being held in your escrow account will lose value by the time your customers finalize their orders. So, we've given you the option to hedge the future payments you are expecting from escrow such that the dollar value of the payment doesn't change as the Bitcoin exchange rate changes.
For example, someone purchases one of your 10 btc listings. The dollar value of the order when purchased is $100. Now, a week later when the transaction is finalized, those 10 btc are no longer worth $100, they're worth $50! Because you hedged the escrow, you won't get paid 10 btc, you'll get 20 btc equaling the original value of $100. Of course, the opposite is also true. If Bitcoins appreciate in value while your payment is in escrow, you'll get fewer Bitcoins, but they will still equal the original dollar value.
The option to turn off or on escrow hedging can be found on your "settings" page. While it is on, the payments for any orders placed with you will be hedged. Payments for orders placed while it is off will not be hedged, but any hedged orders still not finalized will remain hedged.
On your account page, your escrow balances are split up between hedged and unhedged orders. All orders are hedged as soon as they are placed and unhedged as soon as you are paid.
You can expect a loss of about 4% of your normal payment when using the escrow hedging feature. This is due to the fact that, both when hedging and unhedging, you will lose the bid-ask spread between the available orders that can be used to fill your hedging order.
If you need the most up-to-date USD/BTC exchange rate, we recommend

To minimize the time between when Bitcoins are credited to your account and when you are able to convert them to your currency of choice, and therefore minimizing your exposure to exchange rate fluctuations, we provide an auto-withdrawal feature. Every time a payment comes into your account your entire balance will automatically be withdrawn to three Bitcoin addresses of your choice. This feature can be enabled on your settings page.
A note of caution: it is possible for an adversary to discover your auto-withdrawal address by looking for a transaction in the block-chain around the time they finalize a transaction with you for an amount similar to what they paid you (adjusted for exchange rate fluctuations if hedging). To help obscure your withdrawals, you must enter three withdrawal addresses. Your withdrawal will then be made in 3 random sized chunks to these three addresses with a small, random delay in-between them. These addresses can all be on the same wallet or exchange account so you don't have to keep track of multiple wallets. This will help them blend in to all of the other transactions, but you should change your withdrawal addresses regularly so that an adversary can't see any patterns over multiple transactions.
Pro-tip: set your auto-withdrawal addresses to deposit addresses at an exchange site and keep an open sell order there that is below the market rate, so as soon as the funds are confirmed there, they will be converted into your currency of choice.

You must describe your listings accurately and truthfully. If you do not, it will be reflected in your feedback ratings and you will lose business. We have zero tolerance for any kind of scamming or cheating and have taken many precautions to guard against it.

Some cameras record information about you in an image's meta-data such as GPS location. If you link to an image in your listing, be sure to remove ALL meta-data from the file that could reveal details about your identity.

Every precaution must be taken to maintain the secrecy of the contents of your client's package. Creatively disguise it such that a postal inspector might ignore it if it was searched or accidentally came open.
Ship USPS if within the United States. They must obtain a search warrant to open any packages.
If the contents of the package have an odor or can be detected by canine or electronic sniffers, you MUST vacuum seal the package. Do not use odor masking agents such as coffee because dogs are trained to sniff for these too. Check that the vacuum sealed bag is holding tight around its contents, otherwise there is probably a leak.
Make sure the exterior of the package raises no suspicion. Look as professional as possible. The idea here is blend in as much as possible with the rest of the mail stream which is mostly "business reply mail." Please print your labels, as hand written labels can be a give away.
Protect the contents of your package. If your item is brittle (such as pills) it needs to be sent in padded packaging (such as a bubble mailer). Do not send pills or any bulky items in envelopes. Envelopes get flattened in automated sorting machines and their contents get crushed.
Do not reveal the details of the packaging you use. You can be tracked this way.

Customer service
As an independent seller, we expect the highest levels of customer service from you. Go above and beyond for your clients and you will be rewarded with superior feedback and repeat purchases. Reputation is everything here and the best way to cultivate it is to treat your customers with respect and courtesy.

Restricted items
Do not list anything who's purpose is to harm or defraud, such as stolen items or info, stolen credit cards, counterfeit currency, personal info, assassinations, and weapons of any kind.
Do not list anything related to pedophilia.
Practically speaking, there are many powerful adversaries of Silk Road and if we are to survive, we must not take them all on at once. Additionally, if you try to please everyone, you will wind up pleasing no one. So certain things are restricted just so we don't scare too many off.
On a moral level, we take the high road, pun intended ;). Those who seek to control the behavior of their neighbors through force are immoral. Silk Road exists to circumvent that force and provide a safe-haven where civilized people can come together in peace for mutual benefit. To allow listings of items designed to defraud or harm innocent people would be to stoop to the level of the very people we are standing up to.
If you are unsure about a listing, just drop us a line and we'll let you know.

Buyer statistics
When a new customer buys one of your items, you will have a chance to see some statistics of their past purchases. We give you this limited data so you can make better judgements about who you can trust to do business with. A buyer who has been a member of Silk Road for a while, has many purchases, and doesn't have a high refund or auto-finalize rate is a great buyer and most likely deserves your trust. Other buyers won't have a track record yet, and it's up to you if you want to give them the benefit of the doubt and help them get started establishing their reputations. Working with buyers who have no record or a bad record can be a great way to establish yourself as a seller. Once you have a reputation of your own, you can afford to be more picky.

We strongly encourage you to create a separate account for making purchases. If you do not, it is possible for an adversary to find out your mailing address. If you buy something from them, and provide an address, they know that the address belongs to you and can see from your feedback how much you are selling and what you are selling.

Cash advance
From your account page, you may accept advance payments on your orders that are currently in escrow. You'll see four numbers and a form field in a “cash advance” control panel. The first number is your limit. If your total outstanding advance payments meet or exceed this limit, you may not accept any more cash advances. The next number is the total of your advances currently outstanding. The third number is the difference between the first two, the total still available to you. The fourth number is the current fee for taking a cash advance. When you put the amount you want advanced to you in the input field and click go, that amount is immediately credited to your available account balance. This credit comes from the expected payments of your most recent transactions. When those transactions are eventually finalized, your account is not credited for them because you have already been paid. If a full or partial refund is issued for one of the transactions, your account is debited by the amount you were advanced plus the fee (or a prorated amount in the case of a partial refund).
For example, you sell a 20 btc item and then a 10 btc item. Your account page tells you that you have a 15 btc cash advance limit and the fee is currently 10%. You need all 15 btc, so you enter in 15 and click go. First, you are advanced 9 btc from the most recent 10 btc sale (10 btc minus the 10% fee). Then you are given a partial advance from the previous sale: 6 btc for a total of 15 btc. Let's say the 20 btc sale goes off without a hitch and the buyer finalizes the order. At that point, you would be paid 20 btc minus the 6 you were advanced, minus 10% of 6 (0.60 btc) for the fee, for a total of 13.4 btc. Next, let's say the 10 btc sale goes to resolution and you give your customer a 100% refund. In this case, you've already been advanced 9 btc and need to pay the 10% fee for a total of 10 btc, the original price. Therefore, 10 btc will be subtracted from your available account balance. If this causes your account to go negative, then any future deposits or payments will go toward reducing that negative balance.
The limit and fee are both self-adjusting according to a few simple parameters. The limit is governed by how much recent business you've done, and how much money you are expected to be paid from escrow. The fee is determined by the supply of and demand for the funds available for cash advances.

Things to avoid
Below is a short list of specific things you should avoid. It is by no means exhaustive, but taking any one of these actions could get your seller priviledges revoked:
  • Directing your customers to pay outside the escrow system or in currencies other than Bitcoin
  • Leaving fake feedback for yourself from a dummy buyer account
  • Threatening your customer, even if it is a veiled threat
  • Saving customer addresses
  • Claiming to have sent an order when you haven't

Final note
Regardless of your motivations, you are a revolutionary. Your actions are bringing satisfaction to those that have been oppressed for far too long. Take pride in what you do and stand tall.
If you have any questions or concerns at all, we are here to support you. Please also send any suggestions for improving this guide via the "Vendor Support" link below :)
